THE BIRTH OF IT
Vakay is the first Eyewear brand in Africa. The used Wood species are durable and luxurious and all the anufacturing processes are complete here in Tunisia.
In fact, the wooden frames are becoming the choice of ecologist consumers. It’s not just about simply fashion, but also about a conscious and responsible behavior towards our planet.

By working closely with local businesses, for the purpose of developing new techniques and tehnologies, the VAKAY team created a new ecosystem for a new industry in Tunisia: the Eyewear.
The passion for handicrafts and natural materials led the co-founders to an eternal process of research and development. In order to materialize comfort with a distinctive design, every little detail is worth the reflection of our designers as well as a valuable manipulation from our skilled craftsmen.

PROCESS
Each pair of VAKAY glasses requires precise working hours. We treat our glasses with the greatest delicacy, love and pay attention to all stages of production.
Each step requires meticulous care. Our caring craftsmen have a natural sensitivity to the details.
The frames are maintained under a systematic review from the first phase of wood selection, until their delivery with matching handmade cases.
The production process requires the handling of specialized equipment, and we work with local suppliers in order to implement a fair trade process.
Our research and development team is asked to test new natural materials and to design original products while keeping comfort and durability our top priority.
PROCESS
DEVELOPMENT
Back in 2012, production started in a small garage where VAKAY team only had rudimentary machines and simple tools, to create their first prototypes. Despite the lack of financial resources and a non-existent ecosystem in Tunisia, co-founders focused on their strengths to establish a sustainable business that promotes Tunisian arts and crafts; an autonomous team driven by a common goal : «to create a product that people like» overwhelmed by the priceless support of friends, family and fans in Tunisia and abroad.
The VAKAY team has worked for years to improve its products and train its craftsmen, focusing on how sophisticated and perfect every detail is. We have developed our own process of making pairs of wooden glasses quite special.
We also combined our expertise in engineering and industrial design to create our own machines.

Recently, in 2019, our production process has been incrementally evoluated by combining another material which is the Acetate.
This evolution symbolizes our vision for not only our activity development but also the industrial involvement over the years. The marriage between wood and acetate is making our frames more sophisticated and fashionable with wood and 18 carats encrusted gold pieces. Our craftsmen are working hard to make designs a reality and creating an added value in a new way and that what innovation is.

Simply elegant, the African tattoo in 18 carat gold has been introduced in 2017 as a signature for VAKAY collections.

The Bubinga also has an exceptional report between strength and weight.

“Exclusive Blessing”
Walnut is one of the most exclusive species. The sapwood of walnut is creamy white, while that the heartwood varies between light brown to dark brown chocolate , from time to time with a purplish dominance and darker streaks. The wood develops a rich patina which adds to it more shine with age. The walnut undergoes a majority of steaming, in order to darken sapwood. The wood is usually straight but can sometimes have an attractive yet deco rative wavy texture. Walnut is strong, hard and durable, without being excessively heavy. It has the excellent woodworking qualities, and takes the finishing touches well.
“Dark chocolate”
Hot and noble cocoa from Central Africa: The wood of Wenge is charming by its extrava- gant color and endurance. An intense shade of dark chocolate dominates the wood, with a clear structure delineated by yellow reflections that appears over time, darkening the overall appearance of the wood. It is this tint that brings out the warm and refined aspect.
